How would you describe your personality?
Optimistic and outgoing. I truly love people and hearing their stories. Then I love telling their story through photography.
Is wedding photography your full time job?
Yes, but I do have another business as well that I do when I am not shooting weddings. I own an online photography education program, where I teach photographers how to market and sell their work.
What do you like to do in your free time?
I am a musician and I play the viola. My husband is a musician as well and plays the piano so we love to create music together. I have four kids and family in the area. Family is very important to me so most of my free time is spent with family.
How long have you been doing photography and what got you into it?
About 10 years. Classical music is my background. I studied the viola at Juilliard. However, the program was very intense so I got burnt out after school and needed a change of pace. That is when I picked up a camera and realized it uses the same creative part of the brain that music does. I fell in love. I have been in the business professionally for 8 years doing weddings and portraits exclusively.
Describe your photography style?
I would describe my style as vibrant and colorful. True to life. I want the images to look as much like the day actually looked. I don’t do a lot of editing because I want it to look accurate to that day.
Do you prefer posed pictures or unposed pictures?
I love to be like a fly on the wall. More like documentary style. I love for the day and emotions to naturally unfold and then capture those moments. However, family photos are posed and I do direct the bride and groom so they don’t feel uncomfortable. Place them into the light so they look their best. I want it to look like them and not overly stiff and awkward.
What is your favorite thing about wedding photography?
When you have a profession, like a lawyer or doctor for example, people only come to you when there is a problem. With my job I get to spend time with people on the best day of their life! It still amazes me that people invite me in on their happiest day! It really is an honor.
Do you have a favorite photography memory?
Yes I do. Allie and Mitch had already been married for several years, but they came to me with a desire to re-create their wedding portraits. They got dressed up and joined me on a beautiful farm in Gaithersburg, MD, where we spent an hour capturing some great portraits of them together. The weather started to turn as we were wrapping up, so I encouraged everyone to head to the cars before it started pouring. As we turned around, we came face to face with this huge, beautiful rainbow! So I quickly pulled my camera back out and started shooting. The rainbow only lasted about 30 seconds but we captured some of my favorite portraits and one of these images is proudly displayed in my studio as a large canvas.
What advice would you give to brides when they are picking a photographer?
When choosing a photographer make sure you really like the style. Look at pictures from the whole wedding, not just the “highlight reel”. Connect with them personally. Because they are the person you are going to spend the most time with, you need to choose someone you trust. That way you can just be in the moment and enjoy the day. If you are micromanaging your photographer you wont enjoy the day.
