Social media is changing the way we communicate with people every day. It is even changing the way that we announce engagements to the people we know. Since social media is changing every day, we have a few do’s and don’ts that will help you when you announce your engagement on Facebook.
- Check the friend list. You know there are some people who you are not really your friends but you still accepted their friend request when you first met them. They do not really need to know about your engagement. Also, there are those people who could potentially ruin your future marriage. You know who I am talking about– those ex-boyfriends, ex-girlfriends, hook ups and one night stands. If there are any of these in your friend list then un-friend them and get rid of the potential threat before they cause any drama.
- Clean up your profile. In a few months you will be someone’s spouse. As you look through your profile, always have that in your mind, even write it on a sticky note and post it to your computer to remind yourself. It is your profile and it should be things you enjoy however you will soon have in-laws, and cleaning up your profile will help stop some unnecessary drama with your future family. Marriage is a major life change and your profile right now reflects who you are currently.
- Purge your old photos. There is an old saying that a picture is worth a thousand words, but there are some pictures on our profiles that will take more time to try and explain away. You should be proactive with your profile. This should also be done not just for your marriage but also when you are applying for jobs. Your profile is public, especially now that Facebook is a public company. Marriage will definitely change some things.
- Don’t forget it is still your profile. Planning a wedding and getting married to the love of your life is an exciting and important change in your life. It is understandable that you want to share that about you and your fiance on your profile, however your friends still want to know about you. Since it is your profile, your statuses and updates should be about you and what is going on with you. If you want to create a profile as a couple then remember to use the plural pronouns “us”, “we” and “our” in each status and update.
- Don’t overdo the wedding details. Currently one of the biggest complaints that brides-to-be get from friends and family members is the constant wedding talk. People are truly excited for you to be getting married and with the invention of social media, you can update people 24/7/365 days of the year about the new wedding details. As a single friend of people currently in the process of getting married I know first hand about all the constant wedding talk.
- Don’t forget who sees your profile. Planning and coordinating a wedding is emotionally and physically draining and stressful. Sometimes in the heat of the moment we get frustrated and we post things we might later regret. Remember that your profile is public. If you do not want to upset anyone, check the settings of who can see your profile. The worst thing is posting a status update when you are upset and adding more drama to your wedding planning.
